Engineers are Better Mesmers

Apparently if an Engineer reflects a Mesmer clone creation they can create the clone on themselves. The result is an almost infinite number of clones! Nerf Engineers!

12/14 Patch for Mesmers

Happy Wintersday may fellow masters of misdirection! I hope you’ve been enjoying the festive holiday games and dungeon as much as I have. Have I mentioned that the snow ball arena is addictingly fun?

Not only did this most recent patch bring us the spirit of the season, but it also brought a good number of changes to the Mesmer profession. Here are the notes from the patch in case you missed them:

Mesmer

  • Phantasmal Mariner: This phantasm now attacks more often, but does damage in line with its attack rate.
  • Illusionary Whaler: This phantasm now attacks more often, and now does a reasonable amount of damage.
  • Phantasms now initiate combat after .25 seconds instead of one second.
  • Feigned Surge: This skill is now a leap finisher.
  • Vortex: This skill now does pulsing damage after it is created, and is also an ethereal field. (more…)

Big Swords & Butterflies: Blink Is Number Seven

Welcome back to Big Swords & Butterflies! This week we’re going to continue to cover the individual utility skills of the Mesmer, and I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a bold statement right from the start.

So there are twenty different utility slot skills that Mesmers have available to them at this point in Guild Wars 2. As you know by now, you can pick three of these skills to have active at any time, and they are assigned numbers seven through nine on the skill bar.  Personally, I switch my utility skills up quite a bit depending on situation.  Portal will come out, naturally, for jumping puzzles.  Null Field and Feedback will be on the bar in dungeons and other group functions.  Arcane Thievery is a favorite sPvP skill of mine.  Decoy and Veil are good if you’re on the run.  But, there is one skill that’s always in my skill bar, unless I happen to be underwater: Blink.

I seriously have not moved Blink out of my slot number 7 since August.  It’s that good.  It’s that versatile.  As far as I’m concerned, it’s synonymous with being a Mesmer.  No other profession gets the privilege of having a utility skill even close to being this useful.  No other profession gets the privilege, nay, the responsibility of moving where ever they want instantly in a range of 900.  The lesser professions may try, but they all fall short.  They have shorter ranges, longer cooldowns, or predefined targets that limit true mobility.  Throw in the correct trait bonuses and you can be teleporting at 1200 range every 24 seconds.  All I can say to the 85%ish percent of you out there that don’t play Mesmer is this:  Eat your heart out. Big Swords & Butterflies: Decoy and the Art of Hiding from Everybody

The devil is in the details, and this is especially true for Guild Wars 2.  We’re starting a new series here at Big Swords and Butterflies where we will go in depth into every available slot utility skill for the Mesmer profession.

It’s a big choice when making any build — what will go in those final four slots? We’re here to help you always pick the right skill for the right situation.  First up in the series: Decoy!

Big Swords & Butterflies: Team Glamour

Welcome back, friends, for another fabulous week of Big Swords and Butterflies, where we do our best to get you the most out of your Mesmer.

The game is getting to the point where many people are reaching level 80; they are starting to run dungeons a lot more, they are getting into sPvP, and trying to take the field in WvW. Most of these players are playing with a team and we discussed a few weeks ago about the role of the Mesmer in dungeons, so this week I’d like to talk a little more generally about playing on a team and using glamour skills.

“Glamour? What does that have to do with being a team player?” you might say? I’m glad you asked! The official definition of a glamour skill, per the wiki, is a type of utility skills exclusive to mesmers that create shining fields on the ground, which have helpful effects on allies or harmful effects on enemies.” Grammar aside, we can see that these fields are useful to your team in that they provide “helpful effects” (aka boons), and these effects are plentiful, plus they also function as combo fields.
