GameStop Earnings call stirs up GW2 Release Date Rumors

Since ArenaNet first announced Guild Wars 2 was in development, many a gamer has been eagerly throwing out release dates. And it is no shock that retailers like GameStop also pay attention to when a game will come out and when it won’t.

According to GameSpot, GameStop CFO Robert Lloyd stated during his Q1 conference call that Guild Wars 2 will be bumped out of the current quarter. This will place the release of the game sometime after July.

With the rumor mill in full swing about when Guild Wars 2 will be released, ArenaNet has mentioned clearly that any dates not set officially by them is pure speculation. Take this information with a grain of salt.

ArenaNet Blog: Reserving your Character Name for Guild Wars 2

ArenaNet updated their blog for the second day in a row, this time explaining the way character names will work in Guild Wars 2, and how you can reserve a name using your original Guild Wars account.

Character names in the Guild Wars universe work differently than they do in most other MMOs. Whereas in most MMOs character names are unique only within their world/server, in Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, character names are unique across the entire game. In Guild Wars 2, when a player acquires a name like Wizardex, he or she is acquiring it across all worlds. Clearly this places more importance on grabbing the name early.

But how do you actually reserve a name?

Thus our policy will simply be as follows: to preserve your character name from Guild Wars into Guild Wars 2, you must be an active Guild Wars player (more on that below), and you must create a Guild Wars 2 character with the same name as your Guild Wars character during the Headstart Access period or on launch day.

Alienware & Guild Wars 2? New Promotion Spawns Speculation

This morning as I rifled through my inbox on the iPad — deleting mountains of spam that had accumulated overnight — one message in particular caught my eye. It was a fairly typical email from Alienware hawking their uber-machines, but there was something more — the Guild Wars 2 logo, along with an Asura just hanging out casually in the background! Guild Wars 2 Incoming?

Now, I’m not a product manager for hardware manufacturer nor a marketing director for a game studio, but it would seem that running this kind of marketing tie-in means that wheels are in motion. Tasty wheels. Wheels that just may lead us to Tyria sooner than we expect.

I realize this isn’t an announcement of course, and there’s been no shortage of release date speculation recently. But just as swiftly, ArenaNet was quick to remind players that until you hear something from them directly, anything you see is just that – speculation. So keep that in mind.

What say you, fine readers? Is this a harbinger of good news soon to come? Or is it just the money machine working the early shift?

Chronicles of Tyria

A new fan project appeared not too long ago called Chronicles of Tyria. The idea is for players to incorporate their in-game experiences with Guild Wars 2 into a story driven format from the narrative perspective of their in-game character. All stories are done as diaries, and best of all; the site will allow Guild Wars fans to, from time to time, add their own stories to this truly impressive project.

Focus on the simple things. Veal on the table at dinner. This is how you hold your staff. Always double every knot, the last thing you need is something coming loose in the middle of a fight. Never look a tribute in the eye unless they speak to you first. When you shoot a blunderbuss, close your eyes when you pull the trigger or the smoke could blind you and leave you vulnerable to your enemy.

ArenaNet Blog: One Player’s Journey Across Tyria and America

ArenaNet has released a new blog post which proved to be quite an interesting read. Unlike previous posts which focused on different aspects of the game play experience, this new post titled “Meet Ameranth – One Player’s Journey Across Tyria and America” chose to focus on the story of Amarenth, an original Guild Wars fan’s online alter-ego, and her real-life counterpart, blogger at Adventure Awaits: The Story of a Woman and Her Dog, Kelly Wells. After being inspired by her own character creation, Wells decided to embark on her own real-world adventure, traveling from Maine to California on foot.

I want an adventure, and I want others to realize that they can have an adventure—that all you have to do is go out there and try. You don’t have to be super fit, or have the special equipment, or have a million dollars. You just have to walk out that door and throw yourself into the world.

Dungeon Armor Sets

Kenrid, a regular poster on the Guild Wars Insider Forums, took screenshots of the Lion’s Arch dungeon armor vendors for the Guild Wars 2 Wiki, but dropped by to give us a look as well. The vendors are wearing the gear sets they sell, providing you with a preview of the gear.
Something to take note of…

…at current token reward rate, it takes 105 dungeon runs to get the whole outfit of one set.
