Previously we had a chance to play Guild Wars 2 on a Mac, however it was mostly a hardware test in Bootcamp due to the limited amount of time with the client before beta testing began. Earlier today, Reddit user CertifiableNorris successfully ran GW2 within on Linux in using a Wine wrapper. For those who like to run Windows-based games on the Mac OSX using such programs as Crossover or Wine, this is great news.

This morning I tried running the Beta client on Wine and it worked nicely.

Specifically, I am running Xubuntu 12.04 x86_64 and using Wine 1.5.2. I have an Nvidia GTX 570 and I’m using the proprietary Nvidia driver, version 295.40.

I’ve submitted a report to Wine’s AppDB, which will hopefully show up here soon, along with some screenshots of it working. [It ran] slower than on Windows with the same graphics settings but I didn’t experience any glitchy bugs.

There was no special setup required beyond installing Wine. It might work on Mac like this too.

Edit: It seems that some users were able to get the beta client running on OSX, as per Telkkar’s statement. Sadly, the version of OS was not listed.

I just now tried it on my Macbook Pro 5,5, running Arch. It works MUCH better than I thought it would. Of course, I need to run it on super-low settings; but imo, it’s playable for sure.

Specs: Core2Duo ~2.23 GHz, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 9300M (maybe 9400M).
