Players new to Guild Wars 2 are going to be awestruck when they get their first look at the massive, dynamic and vibrant world that ArenaNet has created for them. When focused on the bigger picture, it’s often the little stuff we miss out on.
Here are five small tips that will help new players get the most out of the game.
A brief summary of the five points:
- The cities are massive. Look for speed boost NPCs in the main cities to move around faster.
- Disable double-tap dodging, and bind a key to dodge. The game’s “dodge” hotkey will make you dodge in whatever direction you are running.
- Disable autotargeting to use leaping weapon skills for a speed boost when out of combat.
- Use modifier keys to get better access to your other abilities.
And possibly the most critical one…
- Deposit all collectibles. See the video to learn how.

I completely 100% disagree with the second part of tip 2. This game has a load of hotkeys, adding one for each direction of dodge is pretty unnecessary. Otherwise, not bad. Number 4 is kinda unnecessary if you've ever played any mmo...but yeah, not bad.
@theDoctor I’ve corrected the summary language that my Editor-In-Chief added. You only have one dodge key, and it is bound to V as Aliette said.
For players brand new to the game, for whom dodging is a totally new experience, double tapping is going to lead to wasted dodges. This could lead to not having it available when it’s needed most.
4. Use modifier keys....
Better yet, if you have a little disposable income, pick up a G13 or Nostromo (I have the G13 and love it, especially since it's joystick allows for diagonal movement) -- I always used to look down on these keypads, but finally caved when I realized that it made sense to use a thumb joystick for WASD instead of dedicating three fingers for basic movement (this makes mobile combat so much more fluid -- no more twisting fingers together to try and move accurately while firing off skills). The G13 has completely revolutionized my MMO experience.
I need to remember to buy gathering tools right off the bat too. Forgot EVERY beta.
